Choosing a scan mode

Most antivirus products run time-consuming scans that slow computer performance while you wait. ZoneAlarm security software helps you avoid this problem by using scan modes with appropriate degrees of speed and smart selectivity:

Choosing a Scan Mode:

  1. Select Anti-virus/spyware.
  2. Click the Advanced Options button.
  3. In the dialog that appears, under Advanced Options, click Scan Mode.
  4. Choose a scan:
    Ultra Deep Scan
Slowest. This scan is run the first time to establish a secure baseline and is rarely needed thereafter. Scans all files, folders, and archive files such as .zip files.
    Deep Scan
Slow. Recommended every six months or after exposure to a virus outbreak. Scans all files and folders. Skips archive files which pose minimal risk because they cannot self-activate. Recommended every six months or after exposure to a virus outbreak.
    Normal Scan
Default mode after first scan. Recommended as your regular scan mode. By skipping archive and non-executable files you get a quicker scan with minimal risk of missing viruses that could self- activate.
    Quick Scan
Fastest. A convenient scan to run for extra protection when you don't have a lot of time to wait. Scans only common Windows folders, Startup folders, and folders linked to startup items, which are common places for hackers to place viruses. (Programs in these folders can run automatically without your permission, which creates the most risk for you.)
  5.
Keep in mind that your Scan Mode settings override your Scan Target settings. For example, regardless of the folders you select as your Scan Targets, if Quick Scan is your scan mode the only folders scanned are Windows and startup folders.
